When you sell a dog that has been registered with the AKC, you do not have to sell breeding rights. The dog can only be registered if it has been neutered or spayed. Some breeders will only sell their dogs this way, and will only give breeding rights if they approve of the breeder and believe in their program. Many alternative registries will register any dog, even one obtained with out breeding rights and these alternative registries, but not the AKC, can register their offspring. When you see a breeder selling puppies registered with other registries, but say the parents were AKC, this is usually what has happened. Some AKC breeders are neutering their dogs before placing them in homes to prevent this from happening.
