IMO, that is the reason why you don't see people speaking out against the black coated like you do chocolates, parti and goldens. Even though they do not have the standard steel blue, when used in breeding, it is with the intention of bringing richness of color back into a line and producing off spring that
do meet the set standard.
In addition, I have to think that there is not as much criticism of the black coats being an off color because the exclusion of them is such a recent change.
