In the long run, I believe your dog would be better off eating a moisture filled diet, such a high quality canned food or better yet, raw.

Is it just the cost that's making you want to change?

You could try a pre-made raw product like Nature's Variety. A 6lb bag of the beef goes for about $25 here, and I'm guessing would feed one Yorkie for close to a month.

If you do decide to change to a kibble diet, I would still at least add in some canned. The increased meat/moisture content is good for their kidneys, urinary tract system and overall health.
So many people think the dry food cleans the teeth. That myth has been around a long time and isn't likely to go away soon. It's actually the chewing activity itself that helps keep the teeth healthy. That can be on a rawhide or any kind of chew bone. I didn't want to offend anyone by pointing that out.

Most people prefer dry food for longer-haired dogs just for cleanliness. Canned food gets all in their hair and you have to wash their faces every time they eat or you have a mess on your hands. I give mine some canned food occasionally (other than one that's strictly on canned food) and supplement it with some home-cooked food.
