I just wanted to mention that my niece was born with multiple birth defects among which was a hair lip and full cleft palette (both hard and soft). When we heard about all of the things that were wrong our first thoughts were "I hope she doesn't make it." That is hard to admit now but it is what it is. BUT, personally speaking, the first time I laid eyes on that baby and held her my heart was taken and there was nothing I wouldn't do for her. A lot of the time it meant staying up all night in hospitals following one of many many surgeries. It meant special feeding and my brother and sister-in-law needed all the help they could get.
Kim turned out to be a remarkable young woman who dedicated her life to nursing and taking care of children with birth defects. She died in a car accident at the age of 23 leaving several thousand friends to grieve. In her short life she touched many people.
