Don't fret over distance on the stay. Concentrate more on time. When we started, I literally had to stand on his leash to keep him from moving. But I'd stand there for a minute before releasing him. Gradually, you add distance, but it's much easier once they grasp the concept of time. A minute is a good goal starting out.
