RAW Diets And Vegetables Before Prey Model, I started RAW with premade brands. I tried NV, Primal, Oma's Pride, Bravo just to name a few. To make it more cost effective I eventually moved on to grinds that were sold through a local co-op. Among other issues I have with them, I also found one major flaw so I quit buying any of these premade brands; VEGETABLES!
Since I was trying to bring my yorkie "Toy" back from the dead (or so it seemed at the time) the much discussed vegetable issue in raw circles had me listening and researching even more. I had no choice but to "experiment" by leaving them out of my dog's diet as his condition got better but not as good as I had hoped for on premade grinds that contained veggies and supplements in some cases.
My intention is not to scare monger, only to provoke caution regarding the ingredients on labels; - Cruciferous veggies (broccoli, bok choi, kale, collard & mustard greens) interfere with thyroid function. Cooking makes them "okay" again. - Sugary veggies (including carrots, sweet potatoes, and winter squash) can be a problem for yeasty dogs. - Oxalic acid containing veggies should be used with caution, particularly in dogs prone to kidney stones. Cooking does NOT affect the oxalic acid content of things like chard and spinach. Rhubarb should be avoided. - Parsley, watercress, and celery are diuretic and can make dogs who already leak urine even more drippy. - The nightshade veggies like tomatoes, peppers, white potatoes, and eggplant can aggravate arthritis.
