Well as long as you work you can deal with your baby's health issues yourself. There is a credit card called "Care Credit" It's essentially a payment plan. If you need to spend under $300 the you pay back at 11% interest. If above that you make monthly payments for up to 4 years interest free.
I have it and rather that than insurance. Sorry hubby doesn't understand your commitment to your baby. Your right on the money about teaching the kids that just because it's broke you don't get rid of it.
