Couple of ways he can be hurt. A dog's penis actually has a bone in it-- it is not the same as a human penis. It is also an organ that is generally kept with in the pupice which protects it, again quite a bit different than the human version which is a little, for lack of a better word, less vulnerable. When dogs mate and there is a tie, the bitch does not necessarily want to be still. She may move or even try to run off, which depending on the position of the male, can be painful to him or, less likely, actually cause damage to the penis. Also many bitches get snippy both during courtship, penetration, and for my girls, at the moment of the tie when the penis becomes engorged and which can be surprising or slightly painful. I know I have been bit by a bitch I was holding-- but better me than the dog! I don't want the boys being snapped at both because I don't want them being bit and for psychological reasons, my boy is not used very often and he is somewhat timid when it comes to breeding, I don't need a bitch going after him during a breeding session.
