Picking the trainer ahead of time does do wonders. I shopped at Petsmart a few times before signing up for classes and ended up choosing Katie, our trainer, because she was so helpful and full of advice when I had questions. Go sample shop and find the perfect trainer, then sign up once you decide who you want.
