Your John Wayne sounded wonderful. im so sorry for your loss, and know that the new one wont replace him but maybe John sent him your way to help ease your grief and let you know that its okay to love another one again. I bet John will love the garden you are making for him! Just remember that he knows you love him, and miss him and i think that talking to him still helps you out, and lets him know you are thinking of him. I truly believe that those we love and have passed on can hear us talking and praying to them.
