Hi I'm a new yorkie mommy and I would suggest an x-pen instead of a crate. That way the puppy can run around and have more room to stretch their legs. It's what I am training Bella to do when I am in class. I was scared to death she would hate it, but she likes her x pen.
Another suggestion I would have is to see if you have any friends that have yorkies. Try their puppy out and talk to them. Despite breed, each dog is unique in their own way and it may not like being left alone all day or want to cuddle.
