Ovulation happens due to hormones. It happens whether or not the bitch is bred, like in humans. Breeding dates have zip to do with due dates. To get a due date you need to test progesterone levels or if it is not a first breeding you can sometimes count back from prior whelpings to see what day of her cycle she ovulates, usually they are consistent. The eggs mature about 2 days post ovulation but the 63 days starts with ovulation not conception.
