My mom has a cockatiel and my yorkie and her get along very, very well. My yorkie does not really have that "terrier" instinct though. He doesn't chase other animals or things like that. When we stayed with my mom for awhile, the cockatiel was always in an open cage, and Miko always had free reign of the house, but we knew for a fact that they got along. You just need to teach the puppy from the beginning that the cockatiels are not toys.

My aunt's yorkie came to stay at my mom's house for a couple of days, and she DOES have that terrier instinct. So, I guess it just depends on the dog as well...

I hope so anyway. I want to try to keep things as normal as possible for the birds. They were here first. And I love them dearly. They are so very tame. They preen my eyelashes and they fly to me when I leave the room. They are so bonded to me and I'm not going to break that bond. So if they don't get along, then we may have to have times where the puppy is locked up and I have just birdy time. It wouldn't be fair for the birds to have to stay locked up all the time while the dog has run of the house. It's their house too.
