I don't think it would cause too much confusion to bring him downstairs and to his potty spot. Callie's kennel is in our room, which we have a ranch, but our room is in the back of the house and Callie goes potty outside. So for middle of the night/early morning potty needs, I always carry her outside. She is always so slow right after she wakes up anyways it would take her 10 minutes just to walk her little buns outside, lol. She is only 18 weeks, but it has been working well for her, and not caused confusion from what I can tell.
