....I just read your post right above mine, only after having posted mine, so here I am trying to edit it, but too much time had lapsed. Having your pup sleep in a crate at the head of your bed is a good idea and it's what I do with mine. And rather than taking your puppy downstairs, be it leading them on a leash or carrying them, I would take that pup outside to their potty place rather than the pads inside. Skip that step entirely. Either way, he won't be confused by sleeping upstairs and then having to go downstairs to potty. I would carry him if he's real young, because he might not be able to hold it the time it takes to get downstairs and to that spot, I dunno how large your home is.
