Sometimes for whatever reason the puppies may not have made it and the bitches body reabsorbs the fetuses. I found this out in february. My female went into heat in late december early january was bred, tied and showed obvious signs of pregnancy. Palpitation was done and confirmed it but when it came time for xrays there were no puppies. The vet told me that sometimes the mothers body reabsorbs a puppy or the entire litter if there are any complications. She also said it is better that this happens early on because then the female has a better chance of bouncing back. It's harder when she goes full term and delivers dead puppies. There tends to be alot of emotional scarring for the female.
