sorry to read the sad news.
In the future, calling your local SPCA is a good first step. Sometimes they can help directly, but if not they can lead you to another organization. My DH found a wounded baby bat and our SPCA gave us a few good leads. (Though before we could get it poor thing to help, it passed away...)
