I have the same kind of story as 'tobysmom328' in that I was born with allergies and have had asthma since I was 2 years old... a few decades ago. The only pet I was allowed to have as I was growing up was a Goldfish! I was extremely allergic to pets and got asthma when I visited my friends houses who had any kind of pet. I've had to go for allergy shots every week and have a puffer as well.

Now I have 3 dogs (YT, Shih-Tzu and a Collie/sheppard mix), 5 parrots, 17 finches and a cat) and I have no allergic reactions to them. Of course I didn't get them all at once but over a period of about 10 years. I do not go for allergy shots any more and rarely have to use my puffer.

So I agree with 'tobysmom328' in that the more I've been exposed to what I'm allergic to, the more immunity I've built up (slowly). But that's just my experience.
