I don't know if this was the correct or not, but his ears were completely shaved at the groomers so I didn't have to worry about the taping pulling
his hair. I softly folded his ear to the front and taped around them. I have seen where people connect the ears in the center after they are taped. I didn't leave the tape on for more than 12 hours at a time though. I did this at night so he slept with the tape and then for a little while in mornings. He would scratch and I felt really bad. I stopped taping them once he scratched himself good and broke the skin. The groomer told me that the hair could still pull them down so I will probably just keep the top 1/3 or so shaved for now.
