Grey is normal
Mom doesn't have any of it
They weren't born with it
Can't be the sun otherwise it would be on the grey as well.
Can't be such and such otherwise it would be contagious and they would all have it.

It goes on and on. He has no clue and he is a old vet. I am waiting to see if the Vet Research Center can figure it out. I thought in the meanwhile I would ask.
I assume these are domestic short hairs? Anyway I have seen this happen in cornish rex felines. The gray or pigmented hair stayed intact, while the white seemed to slowly fade away to skin. The pigment on the skin remained pink but all white areas of hair gone.. I wonder if animals can develope alopecia( autoimmune disorder) but why the white and not the gray? Interesting..Can't wait to hear what this may be..good luck.
