Coccidia??? Max HAS IT! anyway long story short...for some reason today when we left to go get max his first set of shots since i have had him...he threw up 8 times...by the time we got there he was throwing up foam. and having diarreaha. it was awfull. but the vet checked his fecal. and guess what!! he has cocidia..apparently it is extremely rare for puppys to NOT have coccidia but most go through it unphased and when their immune system develops they fight it off and it dies. leaving them ok. (its a parasite, that is a single cell) anyway sometimes what causes hypoglecimia especially in yorkies is that they have coccidia and when put in just a little elevated stress events they have a reaction including vomiting and diareiha causing them to get dehydrated and die...at least that is what the vet said...shocking right? well i always thought it was weird that he would vomit after car rides, extreme excitment and other random reasons. so all i have to do is an antibiotic and presto! he is ok. for ten days. apparantly it is VERY common. hum??? who would have known? anyway she also told me that you could have an EXTREMELY good breeder and they will have coccidia as well! and when one pup has it at a kennel....they ALL have it. and apparently older dogs can get it too. but their immune system kills it all off before it is even noticed! i thought that was pretty cool/scary so i thought i would share with you!!! also i asked her the precentage of yorkies that get liver shunt...becuase being on here all the time i was for sure that my dog was going to have trachea calapse and liver shunt. but she told me that less than 5% of yorkies have liver shunts. and she did a really simple check for collapsing trachea and he doesnt have it!!! phew...lol she told me i should stop reading about so many problems with dogs and save my self some stress. LOL but i remember reading on here that people said "you know if you have a good vet when they know not to give certain shots, then you have a good vet for a yorkie!!!" and guess what? i didnt even have to ask her about that one! she said..."im not going to give him half of what i normally give becuase he could have a bad reaction so we will wait till he is a little older" i felt sooooooooo relieved. anyway just thought i would share!! comment if you have any expiernce with this or anything really!
P.S. i called my breeder to let him know and he said "yeah i know, i have been battling it for years. and it always come back...thanks for letting me know. ill do a nother massive antibiotic treatment" now that made me feel apprehensive...becuase he should have told me! right????? and i went to go tour a doggy day care place...and they wouldnt let me tour it...should i be worried!!??? should i even consider them?? or is that normal??
Thanks everyone! |
