Congratulations on your huge achievement!! I know what a huge, huge achievement this is...my son graduates 2 weeks from now and you couldn't keep me away for nothing!! I think maybe if you are the first to graduate, then they just don't understand. People who did not go to college don't always get it...it is hard and takes tons of hard work and dedication. My father-in-law has that attitude about college, he didn't go and doesn't see why anyone else need go and what's the big deal?
As far as the other celebration, I think you have to try if you can and separate the two celebrations. I know it is hard, but if you do go with your mom for mother's day, you should go with a good heart (I'm not trying to preach to you here, sounds like it though, huh..LOL) but my feeling is this is a big day for this child too, and you know the hurt you feel when no one cares about your big day, don't take it out on the kid, just because your other relatives are clueless idiots who don't deserve to go to your graduation anyway!!
Be proud of yourself...you deserve to be, and the rest of them don't deserve the time it takes to resent their attitude
