While I whole-heartedly agree that it is important to be careful and watchful having other dogs around a female in labor and with newborn pups, I will also say it depends on the dog. When Lexie had her pups we had Lucky (our neutered yorkie male) and an old mixed cocker breed. They were both hanging around the whelping area (Lexie decided to have her pups in a corner of our family room rather than in her whelping box) and though she let them know to back off if they came to close, she otherwise did not mind them hanging around. I think Lucky was a bit worried about Lexie and chose to keep a watchful eye on her from above as seen in this picture of Lexie resting while waiting for the next pup to arrive.
