Thanks for all the great info! I think it is a Cooper Hawk from the pictures I saw when I looked it up online. There are at least two that I know of. One of them sits on my roof. I just hope the don't have a nest.
I think you may have something about the feeders. I keep a large bird feeder beside the patio because the dogs love to lay on the window seat and watch the birds. And it DOES attract a lot of those doves. Looks like the first thing I need to do is get rid of the bird feeder

please be careful and stay right with them - it wouldn't hurt to use a leash till the season is over - if it's ever over ....that way they're always close to you.

I thought of using a leash but even if it got her on the leash, it would kill her. Their claws can rip right into them, and she's just skin and bones as it is. I like the idea of the enclosed covered area. That's something I think I could put together. Thanks for the great idea!
