I also have a wireless trigger in my studio so that I can entertain the subject & get them to do what I want without also having to press the shutter. You can do similarly by using a tripod & your camera's timer feature. It'll be a little more tricky in terms of timing, but atleast you won't be doing the entertaining AND holding the camera. You'll likely get more interesting poses, as well, as you'll be focused solely on your furbaby.
