I agree! Your vet isn't the one you should speak to about this issue. My vet recommended Science Diet. That's what they carry there. After doing much research I learned myself that Science Diet wasn't a good choice.
Have you thought about feeding raw? I just started mine on Nature's Valley raw medallions and they love it.
