The only problem with talking to your vet about nutrition is that they learn very little about it in vet school and most of what they do learn is taught by food company reps (like Hill's). Most vets don't have a clue about it all. In fact, Ellie's vet admitted that she doesn't know much about it and that I should look online and talk to a nutritionist about homecooking.
Then there are vets with an interest in this area who have decided to study further... Hopefully your vet is one of them...
