Demodex is common when the immune system is broken down. Charlie's records show he has had it since he was 4, he is now 11. What did the vet prescribe? When I adopted Charlie last year, he had it but treated for allergies. Any cortisone medication which includes steroids should not be used on animals with demodex (mange). It activates the mites.
Your pup's case look very painful. Charlie was given Ivermectin until three scraping did not reveal the mites. A scraping always shows whether the mites are dead. I also use Revolution monthly to protect him from reoccurrence.
If there are no other problems involved, high quality food (grain free) and fish oil supplements will help him.
Warmly, Deborah
