the only time i've seen this is with trauma patients, like dogs that have been hit by cars or attacked by other animals. We just had a shih tzu in hosp because it was attacked by a coyote. she had puncture wounds all around her head and neck that left holes in the skin. The holes allowed air to get in a create pockets, if you will, under the skin. they are very painful if touched and it fells like crackles under the skin. they usually go away in a few days.
