My MIL who is the biggest dog lover and 71 yrs old, will not get another dog because she's so afraid nobody will take care of it if something happens to her. Bless her heart. But, she has lots of grand dogs that we take to her to baby sit.
Josie, my SIL's maltese that lives right behind MIL, barks at the back door and my SIL says, "do you want to go to Grandma's?", the she'll let Josie out and Josie will run to my MIL's house and scratch at the front door until Grandma lets her in.
