There's nothing wrong with the J&J shampoo, but a tearless puppy shampoo doesn't leave the hair as fly-away and I've found I prefer Bio-Groom Fluffy Puppy.
If you use a puppy shampoo and make sure it's fairly diluted, there's no reason you can't bathe them more than once a week. If the smell's coming from urine on the coat, you can just bathe the offending parts, or use the baby wipes. They work well. There is also waterless shampoo you just spray on and towel dry that works very well.
