I don't think you can go wrong with studs, really. Plus, most stores allow you to "trade up" - so each year, you could (lovingly) force hubby to up-trade your studs until you reach the size you like best (as if).
For me, I must have a bit of a dangle - so, I have these circle diamond earrings instead of studs.
