Mine is preformed. The guy who installed it used a backhoe to make the hole, placed the form, then filled in the dirt around it. I took it from there. You can buy the kits at Home Depot and they're not very expensive (depending on the size).
The local Wal Mart has a beautiful raised one on display in the garden center and it only holds about 50 gallons. It has beautiful plants around it.
Go for it! I've really enjoyed mine. It's so relaxing just to walk around it in the evenings when I get home from work.
