There are many things you can clean a wood floor with. There are lots of different products on the market that are safe. So much depends on what your floor is finished with. Care of polyurethane finished floors is different than that of waxed or Tung oil floors. Most new floors have a polyurethane finish and can be safely cleaned with a ½ cup of white vinegar in a gallon of water. I keep some in a spray bottle and spray the floor and dry mop it. No water should remain on floor, it should always be perfectly dry when finished.

The problem with this is that all it would take is a minor flaw in the "seal" to allow the steam to penetrate, for example a scratch on the surface. Steam might even take some old finishes off entirely, and should never be used on a waxed floor. Wood expands and contracts all the time, but slowly, steaming would call for rapid expansions of the wood fibers. I wouldn't do it. It's not that hard to do it the right way.
