Unfortunately, there are some people who will read that standard and think they don't have a yorkie because theirs is over 7 lbs or it has floppy ears or is not black and tan or whatever.

Just because your yorkie does not have all the characterisitics set forth in the AKC breed standard does not mean you do not have a wonderful and beautiful and loveable dog. This standard is for those who breed to show their dogs and have set forth "their ideal" yorkie by coming up with this definition for the judges to use in judging in a dog show. It is by no means the end all of definitions for all yorkies as most do not fit this standard.

If your yorkie has charactieristics that are different from the "standard", the show breeders call them "faults", but if they are not life threatening faults then they are of no consequece and it doesn't mean that you have some "inferior" version of the breed. It just means your dog would not win in the show ring. That is all. Show dogs are not superior in quality to non-show dogs in my opinion.
