I'd take him to the vet - sounds like impacted anal glands to me. They'll have to be cleaned out (you DO NOT want to do this yourself - it's really icky) and if they are infected, meds. It doesn't sound like it has to do with the food - I think they just have problems sometimes. Let us know what happens! Best of luck.
