In the long run, what is most important is that you are comfortable with whatever arrangements are made. I know a breeder who had a similar situation several years ago. What she did is make a new contract that says if the murmer (wasn't a murmur in her case, I can't remember what she said it was) disappears by 18 months old then the Buyer pays "X amount" for the puppy. And if it didn't, then the price was reduced to "X amount". Both amounts were reduced from the original price, with the latter amount obviously a much greater reduction (or even free.) If you are close to the breeder, and they are also comfortable with this, then it might be a good solution for both of you.

I would not immediately conclude that the breeder is at fault--it could be that she needs to find a new vet.
