My grandparents used to play canasta (and it was one of the few things my grandma could still do very well even after her Alzheimer's started!). They taught my younger sister but I never had any interest in it. It looks very hard! I agree, play it on Pogo! That should help you learn quite a bit before jumping in with other people. I play dominos on Pogo but only by myself - against the computer - because I try to play during work and when I get interrupted, I don't want to tick someone off that's waiting for me to take my turn.
