I'd take her out.
Ellie was never crate trained and she knows where to potty but very often just doesn't do what she is supposed to. You know, it is annoying but I'd rather her "forget" where she is supposed to go and enjoy herself then keep her in a crate most of the day. I got a puppy so I could be with her and play with her. That doesn't happen if they are in a crate. I know that is the preferred method and I might use it someday, but it seems very sad.
