If you are there to watch him I guess you could monitor him with it off. But if you are not going to be there or can't watch him closely I would leave the band on.
You can get 72 of the Poise pads in the incontinence section at walmart for $12 to $13. They are like maxi pads but much, much more absorbent. When I used maxi pads they leaked and made the belly band wet. The Poise pads can hold it all without leaking.
