I would just ask for references....this should not be offensive at all. I have a bad habit of using my hubby (when he's not there) as an excuse for things like this. Like, 'my husband wanted me to ask if you have references?' I always make sure it's true, first, so I'm not telling an untruth. lol If you're uncomfortable asking, maybe you could do this.
