There are a lot of answers for this one We breed our female once a year and that is her every other heat cycle. Some breeders breed twice in a row then give one heat cycle to rest. So it really depends on how you feel about the subject. Just remember more puppies means more rest time. If you have just 1-2 pups it is a LOT diff. than 4-5. Plus some females will only come into heat once a year so it really depends on your female.

AKC regulations states the the mother can't be under 8 months or over 12 years of age at time of mating and the father can't be under 7 months or over 12 years of age at time of mating. Although I have NEVER heard of a anyone breeding a dog until 12 years of age. Perhaps others have, but I think about 7 years is the general retiring age. JMO though!
