Color (colour) has been a great controversy since stated even as far back as 1904 - mentioned in the book "The Tweenieth Century Dog," stated by Mr. F. Randall (well known breeder in South of England) he believed that a dark steel blue (not silver) was a great improvement on the pale-coloured dogs, which are easier to breed than the darker ones. And then 80 years later the color question still caused great discussion and tempers to flair with breeders being more inclined toward their own personal preferences. Color discussion has been going on for many, many years. JMO - In the past I have seen many darker colored yorkies with better toplines and better structure than the silver or lighter color yorkies. It is better now than what I saw back in the 80's though.

JMO- Also you cannot really compare yorkies of the past to todays. Back in the 80's when I first showed yorkies - you saw more yorkies in the ring with thicker coats and more cottony coats. Today I see more silky coated. Which is an improvement.

As far as different types of yorkies in Europe and here in the US - JMO - I believe that there are so many pedigrees mixed now with yorkies from US and Canada being exported to Europe and around the world - their dogs also being imported here to the US. If you look at pedigrees - I see many European dogs with US and Canada lines in them and visa versa. You can look here in the US too and see many different looks of yorkies too. It really depends on what you are breeding - what look and lines to what as to what you will get or hope to get. Here are some interesting numbers - back in 1967 there were 1,213 yorkies exported from England and most of them arriving here in the US. In 1968 1,743, in 1969 2,361, and by the mid 1970's 2,805. And that was back then. Today I believe it is even higher. ( Numbers stated in the "The Book of the Yorkshire Terrier," by Brearley)

I have also seen many Eurpoean dogs also very tiny as also very light to dark. I see this also here in the US.
