I guess I'm not as easily shocked ... barter has a long history and usually works out well for both parties. I once bartered a stained glass window to a vet for surgical fees for a rescue. I gave up about $50 in glass and my time in return for amputation of her damaged leg and spaying. Both of us got what we needed.
I can understand being amused/put off by the folks who want the "deep discounts" and prey on your pity. But unless you need the money from the sale of the pup to buy your groceries for the next month or pay the electric bill, perhaps the trade of a car they don't need, or a diamond ring could be a good thing for you, too. Maybe Dad shouldn't be driving anymore, but a puppy would make a nice companion to fill the time?
