I think most times, dogs and cats work it out on their own. However, we have a 16 year old blind cat that is definitely at a disadvantage. So we allow sniffing, but if Coby (Reggie leaves her be) starts to bother her, we use distraction, correction, or a water bottle to train to just leave the poor old woman alone.
