I think anything over $3000 is getting rediculous for a puppy being sold as a pet. And even then, I would only pay $1000-$3000 for a pet puppy from a reputable show breeder that health screens all their dogs, is breeding for the right reasons, and is selling me a top quality pet. Otherwise, there is no way I'd pay even several hundred or a thousand dollars to buy from a byb breeding for the wrong reasons (especially if they aren't health screening their dogs). I've seen show quality dogs (meant for show/breeding) sold for $5000plus but I don't know any reputable breeder that charges more than $3000 for their pet puppies (and most charge way less than that).
I know people that have bought pets from some of the best show breeders around for less than $2000 (and some for less than $1000). Just because a dog costs thousands of dollars doesn't automatically mean quality...a lot of petstores and bybs are charging way more than show breeders and that's rediculous. I've personally only seen two breeders charging $5000plus for their pets and I wouldn't buy from either one (not just because of their price but because I don't think they are reputable breeders) and I've seen a lot of ads on puppyfind (most are scams and bybs).
Definitely point your friend to
www.ytca.org Most of the breeders there *should* be ethical and I highly doubt you'll see any charging $5000 for their puppies.
