I routinely register dogs with both....AKC is a bit more strict about their registration requirements. However, as with any registry, there are always ways around everything. (I am honest in my registrations, but I have heard of many, many dishonest things that breeders do even in AKC registrations)
In my personal opinion, the differences are the length of time they have been around, the level of support in activities such as showing, and it is harder to be dishonest with AKC. AKC is considered to be the more prominent registry, and in my opinion is the way to go if you ever plan to show. I have seen both very good and very bad examples of the breed in both registries, though, and so I feel that for a pet the registry should be the last consideration.
