For me, the key to writing and reading a long post is to break it up into paragraphs. This not only makes it much easier to read, but also forces the writer to concentrate on organizing their thoughts instead of just typing a string of thoughts as they cross through the mind.
At least this is what I try to teach my staff when writing business letters/emails in order to adequately express their thoughts as well as keep their readers' interest.
