The chip is very small and they have a special needle that they use to insert it. Not sure if it hurts much.

Do ask the vet though what service is the provider for the chip. I know some chips are more popular in certain areas and not all vets carry a universal scanner so if they do find your baby they might not be able to scan that particular chip as each provider offers a different frequency that their chip is read on.
