I didn't have time to read this whole thread but I will give you some legal advise. I don't know off the top of my head what CA's small claims court cap is, but it is probably not high enough to cover the cost of what you are going to spend on your baby. A lawyer is going to cost you money up front, but may be the best way to go. And yes, most states have a third option. You need to know that in small claims court you can't have a lawyer with you. It is just you against the pet store owner (who probably has been through this before). You are right. Fight him! At least small claims will cover a lot of the surgery and care if not all of it!
